Reunion
A historic commemorative reunion was held for members of the elite WW2 group Z Special Unit on August 13th 14th 15th 2010 at Maryborough, Queensland.
Z Special Unit Reunion Committee hosted the reunion at Maryborough (Queensland) for the World War 2 heroes of Z Special Forces, SOE and 200 Flight. Former members of these units have been invited to attend as have dignitaries from Council, State, Federal Governments and Defence personnel from the Special Forces community.
Fraser Island was the location of the Z Special Unit commando training school (FCS) and this historical site was revisited as part the commemorative reunion.
The very secretive nature of Z Special Unit has meant that the unit has not received the accolades it so richly deserves. Our focus is to increase public knowledge about the unit, their heroic deeds and where they trained. This brings us to Fraser Island, the commando training ground. The historical value of this site should be brought to the wider public’s attention with the intention of honouring the living heroes and those men who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. In turn we hope this will create an interest within the wider community about SRD & Z Special Unit and Maryborough and Fraser Island and its long standing history of commando training. The reunion acknowledged and celebrated the contribution the heroes of Z Special Unit made for Australia during WW2. These gallant men deserve to be honoured for their courage and for their incredible sacrifices during World War 2. This reunion presented an opportunity for all Australians to show their appreciation to the heroes of Z Special Unit and provided the veterans the chance to gather once more.
Some important points to consider regarding the reunion are·
- The reunion honoured the unsung ?WW2 heroes of SRD ~ Z Special Unit.
- All work undertaken by the committee was performed on a voluntary basis.
- The reunion was staged as a not for profit event.
THE WELFARE AND CARE OF THE VETERANS WAS FOREMOST IN THE PLANNING OF THIS REUNION. A FULLY QUALIFIED ADVANCED CARE PARAMEDIC WAS IN ATTENDANCE AT THE REUNION EVENTS ALONG WITH SEVERAL TRAINED FIRST AIDERS. EMERGENCY SERVICES WERE ADVISED OF THE REUNION.
We gratefully acknowledge the support offered by our sponsors and volunteers.
